ITR Certification for the RDAEF2

Effective 1/1/2015, RDAEFs licensed on or after 1/1/2010 became authorized to perform two (2) additional duties in both a dental office setting or in a public health setting, head start program, preschool program or community clinic.  Those duties are:

  1. Radiographic Interpretation: to determine which radiographs to perform on a patient who has not received an initial examination by the dentist
  2. Interim Therapeutic Restorations: to remove soft material from the tooth using only a hand instrument, without the use of a rotary instrument, and subsequent placement of an adhesive restorative material

EFs certified in ITR may perform these duties without direct supervision using the standards and protocols set by the dentist.

The RDAEF with who successfully completes a Board-approved course will be able to:

  • Discuss the history and legal environment for the duties authorized by AB1174
  • Discuss the science behind partial caries, removal and minimally invasive dentistry
  • Identify appropriate patients and teeth for placement of ITRs
  • Demonstrate effective placement of ITRs on typodonts and patients
  • Describe considerations following ITR placement including protocols for identifying and responding to adverse outcomes
  • Determine which radiographs to perform in order to best serve the needs of patient

Course participants will receive instruction through lecture, laboratory and simulated clinical learning at the Institute.  Following completion of the didactic and lab portions of the course, students shall complete four (4) patient experiences either at the Institute or in their clinical dental facility within 30 days.  Participants are required to provide their own patients for the clinical portion of the training (additional information will be provided during the course weekend).

  • Upon registration please enter your RDAEF license number in the “Company” line or in the “Order Notes” section; we will be able to verify if your license is active and valid via the DBC website; Please bring a copy of your pocket license on the first day of class.

Participants completing all course requirements shall be issued the necessary form to notify the Dental Board of California (DBC) of completed certification status. Once all course requirements have been met attendees will receive 12 units of Continuing Education.

Course tuition includes materials and training equipment usage needed for completion of the requirements. Participants will be required to bring their own PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) for use during the lab and simulated-lab sections of the course.  The recommended PPE is as follows:

  • One (1) disposable isolation gown or knee-length disposable lab jacket – long sleeved, cuffed, snap front or tie back (no reusable, washable jackets or gowns)

  • Three (3) pair medical examination gloves in appropriate size

  • One (1) disposable face masks (cone or earloop)

In the event participant does not bring their own PPE, a materials kit will be required to purchase for $10.

Required supplies and qualifications to complete this course are:

  • Must show evidence of current, active status as a Registered Dental Assistant in Extended Functions, licensed on or after 1/1/2010
  • Current BLS from the either the American Heart Association or American Red Cross
