Event Navigation
The California Radiation Safety Certification course provides the participant with the required course curriculum to obtain certification to produce dental radiographs in California. Whether an entry-level allied dental health team member or someone entering the California workplace from another State, our certification course provides didactic instruction in the California Code of Regulations for Radiation Safety and ensures, through lab/pre-clinical instruction, that each participant demonstrates minimum competency in the principles and techniques of radiography prior to human subject exposures. Certification through a Board-approved provider is required to expose radiographs of any type, using any dental radiographic equipment, in any dental-related setting, and for both general and specialty dentistry. For clarification, go to the DBC website at www.dbc.ca.gov and research CCR Sec 1014 and 1014.1.
All course requirements for lecture, lab, pre/clinical and clinical instruction, including the requirements for human subject radiographs, are REQUIREMENTS FORTH BY REGULATION FROM THE DENTAL BOARD, not the Institute; therefore, our requirements are consistent with BOARD REGULATIONS and must be completed in order to achieve certification. These requirements include:
- Completion of a written Radiation Safety for California examination PRIOR to exposures on human subjects (taken during normal classroom hours).
- Completion of two sets of bitewing radiographs (4 films, intraoral) using traditional intraoral image receptors.
- Completion of two sets of full-mouth radiographs (18 films, traditional mix of periapical and bitewing exposures) on radiographic training mannequins using traditional intraoral image receptors (no extraoral images accepted).
- Completion of four sets of full-mouth radiographs (18 films, traditional mix of periapical and bitewing exposures) on human subjects with written permission from a licensed dentist using traditional intraoral image receptors (no extraoral images accepted); to accommodate our students and to ensure proper diagnosis of a full-mouth series is achieved, enrolled students will have four (4) weeks to complete the clinical portion of the course within their own dental office environment.
- Accommodations may be arranged for participants to bring clinical patients to the facility for exposure – by appointment only.
Upon successful completion of the required elements for certification, the participant will receive a certificate of completion allowing them to expose radiographs in the workplace as well as a course completion verification card for submission to the Dental Board, if used for application requirements for licensure as a Registered Dental Assistant.
Course tuition includes all materials needed for completion of the requirements. Course meets: Fridays, 1:00 pm – 6:00 pm; Saturday, 8:30 am – 5:00 pm and Sunday, 8:30 am – 5:00 pm.
Pre-requisite: current certification in CPR (BLS for Healthcare Providers)
Recommended: provide evidence of completion of a Board-approved 8-hour course in Infection Control
Pre-requisites may be taken concurrently if scheduled through The FADE Institute.
*Please Note: Individual tutoring sessions or office training are offered to those in need and may be scheduled/requested by contacting us directly.
